Athletics
Athletic events are also known as track and field events. Track events are running events. Field events are either throwing or jumping.
Track events are broken up as being either:
- sprints (100m, 200m and 400m)
- middle distance (800m and 1500m)
- long distance (3000m +)
Throwing field events:
- discus
- shot put
- javelin
Jumping field events include:
- high jump
- long jump
- triple jump
During our athletic unit we will practice all of these events. I enourage you to research the proper techniques so when we do it in class you are all ready to go and we will be able to spend more time throwing, putting, jumping and sprinting! There are some examples of how the events are done at the bottom of the page in our photo gallery. Have a look!
The following are 2 small articles highlighting succesful athletes.

Steve Hooker and Dani Samuels take out major athletics awards
REIGNING world champions Steve Hooker and Dani Samuels were announced as the Australian athletes of the year at a function in Perth.
Hooker, 27, has enjoyed a remarkable past 12 months, adding the world outdoor and indoor pole vault titles to his bulging trophy cabinet.
But it was his stunning victory at the world outdoor championships in Berlin last August, when the WA-based athlete won despite being hampered by a groin injury, that will be most remembered.
Samuels, 21, became the youngest-ever discus world champion, producing a personal best of 65.44m in the final.
